Tips on How to Become Your Employees’ Favourite Manager

Employees are the backbone of every organisation in the world, and it is highly crucial to retain key talents and top performers who can contribute to the future of your company. There is a saying that people quit managers, not jobs.

A recent survey has revealed that a staggering 79% of employees who have ever resigned from a position say that the main reason for leaving a company is because of their managers, and a further 20% of this group thinks that their previous managers have hurt their career.

If your best workers keep leaving the company then it will certainly affect the efficiency of the organisation and most importantly, it will also reflect on your capabilities as a good manager. That is why it is so important to prioritise the happiness of your employees! Becoming your employees’ favourite manager takes a lot of effort and practice. A great manager doesn’t only rely on their position and authority to run a team, they gain the respect of their employees and that is when you will truly get a team that will have your back.

Acknowledge feelings

It is hard to find time to sit down to have a proper chat with your workers especially with all the workload that is going around the office. Everyone has feelings and some of your employees might be going through emotional and physical pain that you might not even know about. But if you are aware of anything they are going through, put yourself in their shoes and try to understand what they are feeling. Then talk to them about it and ask if they need any help. Sometimes, the littlest things like this will be the ones that are etched in your employee’s heart for a long time.

Encourage intuitive thinking

Yes, it is true that everything these days are all about facts and figures based on research and reports. But sometimes intuition plays an important role in creating something big and powerful. Don’t cut off your employees’ ideas just because you think that it’s has no base. Remember, all great ideas stem from a hunch/intuition and that is how new things are discovered every day! Couple your employee’s good business intuition with some proper facts, and you will have yourself a winning combination!

Recognise achievements

How many times have you heard this? Maybe too many times and that is why you have taken it for granted! People never get tired of getting recognised for what they do and it will also make your employees feel extremely grateful. We are not talking about handing them an award every year or so. Good organisational leaders encourage daily recognition on a job well done and on tiny little things like buying them a drink or a meal every now and then.

Lead by example

Get rid of the ‘Do as I say, not as I do’ attitude. It isn’t going to work and even if it does, you won’t gain any respect from your employees. If you want them to be efficient, hard-working and happy at work, you have got to be the example that they are looking for. Take control of your leadership by turning yourself into the archetype that everyone wants to be.

Show gratitude to everyone

Everyone in the office is important. No matter what role they are in, whether their good work can be visibly seen or not, it is highly important to thank each and every one of them to let them know that they mean a lot to you. Put yourself in their position.  Wouldn’t you feel good when you are appreciated? And most importantly, try your very best not to give preferential treatment to workers that you are socially connected with.

“Leaders who practice favouritism in the workplace have no chance to build a culture of trust.” – Robert Whipple.
